Sites

Our project will consider cases of cultural genocide during the Holocaust at Jewish cemeteries across Europe.

For the first stage of our work, the main geographical focus of our fieldwork will be the Małopolska, Masovia and Lublin regions of Poland, where 1000s of Jewish cemeteries exist in varying states of preservation.

We have specifically chosen these areas because of their strategic importance in the Nazis’ plans to occupy Poland (and Europe as a whole) and due to the subsequent role that these regions would play in their plans to eradicate the Jewish population of Europe.

As part of the Centre of Archaeology’s broader work on these subjects, we will also be undertaking fieldwork in Ukraine.
